TERRE HAUTE — Cheers, Jeers and Tears

• Cheers to Mayor Duke Bennett, whose persistent championing of the cause of adequate government funding in the city of Terre Haute is not easily undertaken. He’s a Republican, so bucking a Republican governor who is seeking to cut business personal property taxes without promises of replacement funds for local governments puts the mayor in an awkward political position. To his credit, he’s standing up for the city he represents, and we encourage him to continue to do so.

• Jeers to the weather … again. We think we can speak for most of the population, even those who find ways to enjoy winter, when we say, ENOUGH ALREADY! Another powerful storm is bearing down on the Midwest and could have a significant impact on travel and services in west-central Indiana on Sunday and Monday. The storm is expected to begin late tonight or early Sunday. Brace yourself. And let the grumbling begin.

• Tears for the people of Sullivan, who are deeply saddened by the tragedy that befell their community on Thursday afternoon when a disabled man was killed by smoke from a fire in one of the city’s downtown public housing complexes. Others were injured. All residents were displaced. Thoughts and prayers from Wabash Valley neighbors are with all those affected.

You can say that again

“Our society is undergoing many dramatic changes. However, I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. It could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and nobody could ever want.”

— Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a conservative Republican, in vetoing a bill pushed by her party’s right wing that would have allowed people with sincerely held religious beliefs to refuse to serve gays in places of business
