LIZ CIANCONE: Extra hour gives more time to reset all the clocks

TERRE HAUTE — At the risk of becoming a bore, I really hate daylight saving time.

Maybe that’s because I am a “morning person.” I like to rise with the chickens, although I do draw the line at sitting on a fence and crowing. I believe in seeing the sun in the morning and the moon at night.

Oh, I adjusted to those years when we Hoosiers lived on Eastern Standard Time the year around. But, there is no fooling Mother Nature. You may call it any time you like, but the sun comes up and goes down on its own time. My adjustment to constant EST meant I had to think and decide the time zone where family members lived before phoning, but it was usually only a one-hour adjustment.

Then we were told by our omnipotent state legislature that adopting Eastern Daylight Saving Time during the summer months would create jobs with the added advantage of eliminating the need for kids to stand in the dark waiting for the school bus. How is that working out? With EDST, we have been living with a two-hour time lag in the morning, but we make it up by going to bed while the sun is still up.

We have been living with this job-creating adjustment to our clocks for several years, but we are still talking about the lack of jobs. Unfortunately, Mother Nature has not cooperated by introducing the 26-hour day.

We have been living with a two-hour time lag during the summer and by delaying the “fall back” on our clocks for an additional number of weeks, we are again seeing kids standing in the dark. Furthermore, as we head east for our exercise at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, we are definitely not blinded by the sunrise!

But, obedient citizens that we are, my Best Friend and I bustled around this past Saturday evening changing all the clocks in the house. We were told that we should always move the hands of a clock clockwise, so setting the clocks back an hour is more time consuming than pushing them ahead an hour in the spring.

It’s frustrating that we always seem to forget a clock or a watch. We have a total of four bedroom clocks. In the kitchen we have a wall clock as well as a clock on the stove and another on the microwave. Instead of adjusting the grandfather clock, we just stopped the pendulum and started it an hour later. Still, we discovered on Sunday morning that we had missed resetting the clock on the dashboard of the car.

I really doubt that all of our clocks are synchronized with our watches. I am reminded of a king of Spain who went bonkers trying to get all of the palace clocks to chime in unison. I’m feeling a little goofy myself.
