EDITORIAL: ‘Women of Influence’: 2013 selectees have given much to their communities

TERRE HAUTE — For the second year, United Way of the Wabash Valley has teamed up with local sponsors to select and honor a group of women who have made outstanding contributions to their communities, professions and families.

On Thursday morning during a breakfast program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the 10 selected were named 2013’s “Women of Influence”, a designation that is not just given, it is earned. They represent the best of the best, and to say their “influence” makes the Wabash Valley a better place would clearly be an understatement.

This United Way project serves multiple purposes, first and foremost to identify and recognize top women leaders who have forged their own paths and developed their own leadership principles. But it also helps the organization raise money for its Success By Six initiative, a community-based program designed to provide every child the opportunity to develop basic reading skills so that they are ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.

This year’s Women of Influence are Terri Hill, Sister Connie Kramer, Jackie Lower, Susan Smith Roads, Carolyn Roberts, Nancy Brattain Rogers, Jeri Stark, Claudia Tanoos and Roberta Weliever.

You can learn more about these remarkable women in a special section inserted in today’s Tribune-Star.

We join the community in congratulating 2013’s “Women of Influence.”
