RONN MOTT: Catching up on the here and now

TERRE HAUTE — Oh my, write down the date, underline it, and say, “The guesswork in Ronn’s column the other day was wrong!” Rush Limbaugh and his right-wing talk brethren are not going to be on AM 1300. It now appears they will be on two AM stations, AM 1440 in Paris, and AM 1230 Terre Haute. This will take a little time to get to that point, but it looks as if the lords of corporate radio are going to do that very thing. AM 1300, a small daytime license, may very well go quiet and disappear into what was once a thriving, independent station.

Along the media gossip trail, I was told the other day David Wire is now plying his trade at a TV station in Evansville.

Speaking of Channel 10, the gossip wires have told me Patrece Dayton is doing some teaching at Indiana State. How much, and what subjects, I was not told. Good luck to Patrece.

Paul Ford’s Christian broadcasting facility, once located on Old U.S. 40, has moved back to a studio formerly utilized by Mr. Ford when he owned and operated what was then a popular music station.

The media seems to step along at a given rate of speed. There was a time an entire city would buzz about a promotion, like a disc jockey staying awake for days in a window of Meis Department Store. This is now just a distant echo from the past.

I’ve noticed the CBS morning show uses bits and pieces of what we once called “oldies.” I remember my deceased friend, Rick James, had suggested to me I play only a snippet of these very old songs just to get people a flavor of what the song sounded like. I said, “No, if I’m going to play the thing I’m going to play the entire song,” and now CBS in the morning is doing the very same thing for the very same reason. Perhaps I should have listened.

My almost famous cats are really enjoying the weather as it moves into a more temperate climate and, of course, the humans who love and care for them are also glad about this.

As I have been working on this week’s efforts, Magic, our black cat, has just jumped into my favorite chair and in a somewhat subdued cat tone has said, “Snooze and you lose.” He now occupies my chair.

As I look out over Collett Park, trees bare, grass brown, I await the sure sign of spring and those beautiful, little white flowers that will soon blanket the oldest park in the city of Terre Haute.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
