EDITORIAL: Warm thoughts on cool days (Part I of III)

TERRE HAUTE — As the snow and ice melt and our concentration returns to things other than winter, here is the first installment in a collection of recent developments in our community worthy of praise.

Something good’s brewing

We try not to prefer any one local business over any other.

But the former Coffee Grounds location in downtown Terre Haute is special, for with its opening in 1993, it was the forerunner of other local and chain coffeehouses that now are spread around town for java junkies who need to hopscotch from cup to cup.

That’s why it was especially good news in our March 1 issue that Kevin Hunt is reopening the spot, with a new added twist, the potato. It’s called Tater and Joe’s Coffee Grounds — with homage to its founding name — and, yes, it will serve baked potatoes in addition to joe.

It’s an interesting twinning of food and drink. It also keeps alive a positive place in our community where one can mingle with friends, chat with strangers, enjoy art on the walls in a historic setting, borrow WiFi, savor the tastes and enjoy the aromas.

A refill, please.

Y we can’t take it for granted

Not many months ago, Vigo County was without a Y — either women’s or men’s — and all that those organizations had come to mean to our community. Both the YW and the YM had closed, and a void existed.

A reminder of that situation came last month with the story that the Vigo County YMCA was kicking off its annual fundraising campaign, which this year eyes $50,000.

For nearly two years — since June 2012 — the Vigo Y has been revitalized, thanks to the strong support of the Clay County Y leadership, which took over the local program administratively and gave it new life. The Y and the Terre Haute Park Board (from which the building at 951 Dresser Drive is leased) have worked hard together to make the effort successful beyond the rosiest outlook.

Vigo County should not again take for granted the great community asset an active Y can be. A great way to acknowledge that is to make a gift — even a modest one of a few bucks — to the Y to help it with its programs. To learn how to donate, call 812-232-8446 or visit www.vigocountyymca.org.
