America is on a dangerous spiral

This past week, we witnessed the re-election of one of the most liberal presidents that this country has ever had. The people have spoken and I accept the fact that President Obama will be in that office for another four years. This fact does give me great concern because this president’s policies, in my opinion, are following a cycle that is leading us to a predictable disaster.

I would like to present a theory that was first put forth in 1787 by a Scottish historian named Alexander Tytler. The following is a direct quote:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from  the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

“From  bondage to spiritual faith;

“From  spiritual faith to great courage;

“From  courage to liberty;

“From  liberty to abundance;

“From  abundance to complacency;

“From  complacency to apathy;

“From  apathy to dependence;

“From  dependence back into bondage.”

Looking at the cycle, it seems to me that we are in the seventh stage, “from apathy to dependence.” I think this because if you look at what is happening in our country you will see why. The Federal Reserve is sustaining our national debt by printing money at a rate that will devalue the dollar so much that it will become worthless. The administration cannot bring its spending under control. Inflation is here and getting worse. Already we have been told that Obamacare will cost almost $2 trillion instead of the $1 trillion that was proposed. Taxes are going up. People are becoming more and more dependent on the government.

Example: The federal government is now paying for more than 3 million people to have a cell phone. We are paying rent; grocery bills and other sundry items with food stamps (47 million people) and we are paying people for up to almost two years to stay home and not work through unemployment insurance. There are many more programs that create dependency, but this is enough to illustrate my point.

Look at the cycle as put forth by Alexander Tytler and see where you think we are. We are a little over 200 years old and will make it a few more before we reach the eighth stage. I probably won’t be around to witness it but unless we change our current path and begin to promote independence, free enterprise, debt reduction, plus individual and national pride, we could well confirm Alexander Tytler’s theory.

Our grandchildren could well inquire, “What happened to the good ole days.”
