TERRE HAUTE — A huge day for Purdue basketball

As I’ve read your newspaper the last few years, I am aware of the scandals which have engulfed our government (the IRS, the tragedy at Benghazi, the presidential power grab) and especially, the circumvention of the constitutionally equal branch of our government — Congress.

And yet, in Bill O’Reilly’s Super Bowl interview, President Obama asserted (and I am paraphrasing here). “Scandals, what scandals? We don’t have any scandals.” Well, I don’t follow the president’s press conferences any longer.

A new subject has emerged in my philosophical perspective: College basketball. On Saturday, Feb. 15, I was fortunate to be in the stands, with friends, in the sold-out Mackey Arena on the campus of Purdue University for the battle between the Boilermakers and the Hoosiers. It was an unforgettable scene. The Stars and Stripes occupied a prominent location up high on the rafters.

For weeks, before the game, I kept thinking how we combat the hot-shooting Hoosiers. In describing the battle, I don’t want to “rub it in” (as the expression goes). A lot of Hoosier fans in our community are good friends of mine. In one phrase, I shall give an account in words: We (the Boilers) emerged as huge victors.

Next year the single venue will be Assembly Hall in Bloomington.

In closing, I remember what a high school coach once told me a long, long time ago: “Aim for the rim and the shots will fall.”
