High honor for track athletes

TERRE HAUTE — When 11 athletes were inducted last night into the Indiana Track & Cross Country Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Indianapolis, four names with ties to Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley were among them.

The four Valley inductees certainly help make this an outstanding class of honorees, and we salute them all.

Among the inductees is the late Ted Sweatt, a Terre Haute Wiley track & field star from the ’60s. Sweatt won a state championship for Wiley in the high jump in 1966. Sadly, Sweatt’s life was cut short. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school and was killed in Vietnam on Thanksgiving Day, 1968.

Families never get over such a tragedy, but we certainly hope Sweatt’s Hall of Fame induction makes them proud once again of this outstanding young man and all he accomplished.

Also honored from the Valley were Erica Moore, a Sullivan High School and Indiana State University athlete who is now training for the 2016 Olympics; Jack Corridon, a Wiley grad and exceptional runner from the 1940s; and Tom Henderson Sr., a Brazil High School athlete during the 1920s.

The Hall of Fame is located in Terre Haute at the Convention & Visitors Center. There will be a reception there today at 11 a.m.

Congratulations to all the winners and their families.

You can say that again
