New Taizé prayer service is Tuesday

What a contemplative, unique and inspiring evening the Sisters of Providence enjoyed with the public Jan. 8 during our first monthly ecumenical Taizé prayer service at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

It was heartwarming to see so many Wabash Valley residents come to enjoy an hour of spiritual refreshment and renewal through silence, music, readings and prayer in the candlelit atmosphere of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

A Taizé–style service refers to a particular form of worship practiced by the Taizé Community, an ecumenical Christian group in Taizé, France.

This community  consists of over 100 brothers — Catholics and those from various Protestant backgrounds — who come from around 30 nations. The community was formed in the 1940s by a man named Brother Roger, and it originally existed to meet the needs of refugees from the Second World War.

The Sisters are pleased that all ages, all faiths and non-denominationals were represented at our first Taizé service. Also, the Sisters of Providence want to acknowledge the support of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Tim Wells of Big Picture Data Imaging, United Campus Ministries, Central Christian Church, Sisters of Providence and staff member helpers, WTWO, WTHI, MIX-FM and WFIU, in addition to the Tribune-Star, West Vigo Times, Parke County Sentinel, The Daily Clintonian, Sullivan Daily Times, The Brazil Times, Robinson Daily News, Paris Beacon-News and the Marshall Advocate.

The Sisters of Providence again welcomes everyone to our next Taizé prayer service from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the Woods.

These monthly services are being held in conjunction with the Terre Haute community’s Year of the River celebration, which focuses on the Wabash River and highlights the importance water plays in all of our lives. For that reason, each of our services has a theme. The Feb. 19 theme is “Thirst.”

If you attended our first service, please come again. If you have never been to a Taizé service, join us and experience its beauty and peacefulness as we celebrate a time to refresh, reflect and renew.
