RONN MOTT: ‘The Monarchy’

I suppose I would have been one of those eager Yankee Doodles wishing to kick King George III out of these American colonies in 1775 or 1776. And, as reckless as I sometimes was in my youth, I may not have lived to see the colonies become the United States of America. Like many politicians of the day, I’ve changed my mind.

I believe the monarchy in Great Britain fulfills a function that only one politician came even close to fulfilling in America. That politician was George Washington. He set a precedent by turning his back on all the adoration, and after his eight years as president he retired to his plantation in Virginia. Washington wanted to think he was above politics. No politician since has felt that way.

The birth of Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge has held the entire UK in its grasp and the rest of the world, including, of course, all of us in America. In this 21st Century I believe everyone knows that one man ruling many men is unacceptable. A constitutional monarchy does, however, things for a country the politicians cannot do. They, by birthright … not by political favor, rise above all of the dirty nuances of politics. The Queen, in this case, is a rallying point for all who live in Scotland, Wales and Great Britain. While our president gets sniped at by the morons we send to Congress, she gives a beacon of hope to all the citizens of this island nation.

Throw in tourists, more than a thousand years of traditions, and a stately lady not getting sucked in to the nitty-gritty of Parliament. The monarchy, if it doesn’t do anything else, is pride and hope to the ordinary British citizen.

So, while I would have been in favor of the rebellion for a great many reasons, I think I would on this day enjoy knowing that Catherine and William’s new child, over a period of years, would belong to all of us. It would be nice to love, cherish, and have hope for the future that rises above the snake pit of politics that exists today in the town the British army set on fire.

Three cheers for you, young Alex (my nickname, not the Royal family’s), and Godspeed on your path to become King. When one of your ancestors passed away, the reigning kings of the day marched in a funeral procession behind the casket. One of them turned to another and said, “Our ranks are getting thinner.” The king he had spoken to said, “Don’t worry, there will always be five kings … the King of Clubs, the King of Spades, the King of Hearts, the King of Diamonds, and the King of Great Britain.” I say pip pip and three cheers for that!
