Editorial: Noteworthy in the News (Cheers, jeers and tears)

TERRE HAUTE — • Cheers to the four students from Sullivan High School who set a new world record recently when they won the prototype diesel division of the Shell Eco-marathon Americas contest in Houston, Texas. The community can be proud of their inspired efforts.

• Jeers to those who disregard posted speed limits and other safety instructions in work zones on roads, highways and interstates. Their conduct puts others in danger and should never be tolerated by law-enforcement officials.

• Tears in support and comfort for the family of Edgar County, Ill., Sheriff’s Deputy John D. Landrum, who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance 25 years ago this month. We hope the Landrum family drew special comfort from the retirement of Deputy Landrum’s badge at a ceremony in Paris on Saturday, as well as the designation of a portion of U.S. 150 in Landrum’s memory.

• Cheers to those receiving degrees this spring from Indiana State University, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Ivy Tech Community College. Earning a college degree is a valuable achievement that will reward recipients in numerous ways throughout their professional and personal lives.

You can say that again

“It’s a little bit heavier than diesel oil. You wouldn’t want to pour this in your car and try and drive away. But it’s pretty good oil.”

— ISU President Dan Bradley, discussing the status of oil production on the university’s Terre Haute campus
