RONN MOTT: Saturday in the park

I got up on a recent Saturday morning and headed for the kitchen. There, I would pour myself a cup of coffee. Then, I would turn the news on and take a stroll across the front porch to locate the paper. I noticed, looking out, that there was a huge amount of people and automobiles at Collett Park. Then I realized they were planting a small tree across the street from my house.

So, I stuck my head out the door and yelled, “Hey, are you guys from Trees, Inc.?” And they said, “Yes!” If I had waited long enough, I could have read the entire thing in the Tribune-Star, a complete and total story by Sue Loughlin.

The story didn’t appear in the paper until the following day. The people with Trees, Inc. do a wonderful job and the parks are going to be nicer because of them.

The very next day, later in the afternoon, snow came tumbling down and the park is covered with a blanket of white. It is always, regardless of the season, a beautiful sight. It truly is like the song, “A Marshmallow World,” soft, flaky, wet and sticky … a very beautiful, winter snowfall. The only problem with that is the date is March 24 and we’re closer to April than we are January. But, beauty being what it is, it is lovely to look at.

Our cats refuse to be intimidated by the snow, and they rush out to throw it in the air, chase imaginary things and, in general, frolic in it. Magic, our short-hair, black cat doesn’t seem to tolerate the cold as some of his feline housemates. He often jumps onto the outside ledge of the picture window to let us know he wants to come in the house. This goes on three or four times because the cats think we’re running a “cat hotel.” Two of them think they are our star guests.

Anyway, the park is gorgeous, buried by a big snowfall, and I’m sure our two boy cats think it was put there just for their amusement. And, please, may it be the last snowfall until next December.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
