RONN MOTT: GOP vs. Common Sense

I guess the GOP thinks we’re all a bunch of idiots. I suppose the fact that they’re threatening to close down the government because they don’t like the “Obamacare” law, they’ll put Social Security at risk, the military, federal law enforcement and nearly everything else designed to help people. These congressmen have a wonderful insurance program and the rest of us can just be hung out to dry.

The truth of the matter is these congressmen are about the dumbest bunch that ever sat in Washington, D.C. I read the limp excuse that Larry Bucshon wrote in this newspaper and I’m really ashamed for him. He voted to take money away from those who, obviously, need it the most … the people in the food stamp program.

I know they say there are cheats in the program just like there were mice in Grandpa’s barn, but about three cats took care of the mice and a little tighter hand on the controls would take care of the cheats. This idea of kicking the poor in the stomach and making the reason sound like economic sense is just plain cruel. And, it’s wrong. When you hurt the most vulnerable in your society, you’re not governing, you’re being flat-out hateful.

The insurance companies, who stand at the mark now at being the richest in the world, could give up a little, tiny bit of profit, sit back and watch “Obamacare” help people who need it. They, instead, join the NRA, Grover Norquist’s so-called tax reform group and any other conservative group willing to take their money.

Watch out, America. It’s not a bunch of Arabs out there that are going to do you in … it’s the super rich who will fight for the right to be the greediest humans on the planet at the expense of every poor, working person in America. It’s very difficult for me to sit here and watch this happen.

A long time ago, a Greek philosopher was explaining the rule that a governing body is only as strong as its weakest link. He explained by taking a chain and telling two strong men to pull it apart. They could not do it. One of the links was broken in half and a small piece of twine took its place. Then, the two strong men pulled it apart easily.

Now, the Republican Party, with the right-wing Tea Party leading the attack, is kicking the weak and needy, the elderly and those who need insurance in the stomach.

We kill people by the dozens with high-powered rifles and the like while the NRA refuses to support any kind of gun control. Even the simplest rules get voted down. And now we’re cutting food stamps from those who need them.

The right wing, unconcerned about massacres and guns, are taking money away from the people who have the most need. Here in Indiana, we’re taking money away from the public school systems so private and religious schools will be getting that money.

I think we’d better change the song … you know the song. You sing it as “God Bless America.” Perhaps we should sing “God Help America,” because we are certainly going to need all the help we can get to keep this country out of the hands of the idiots in this Congress.
