Capitalism not the problem

Mr. Khwaja A. Hasan, your letter in the Trib-Star on July 30 titled “Are we prisoners of capitalism?” draws erroneous conclusions. It is easy today to beat up on capitalism, but you’re beating up the wrong entity.

Today and for many, many years America is not a capitalist country. It still has remnants of capitalism but contrary to popular belief it is far removed from a capitalist system.

It is more properly identified as a mixed economic system, and yet the small remnant of capitalism that is part of this mixed economic system gets all the blame. But, political favors to corporations, tariffs, controls and regulations, subsidies to corporations, franchises, contributions to political candidates and development of government protected monopolies are all a major part of the equation and blame that you only give to capitalism.

It is time to look at the harm that the mixed economic system has and is creating in America. The lost jobs it is creating, the lost industries and closed businesses it is creating and the unfair economic world and business sizes it is creating through government controls and influences in business.

This modified planned economy through much government intervention and favoritism is greatly hurting America, the American worker, many businesses and unjustly making millionaires and billionaires today. The culprit is the mixed economic system, not capitalism.

Habitat thankful for donations

Habitat for Humanity of Clay County has been blessed with more wonderful donations. All proceeds of the Kroger Cruise-In, organized by Jonathan Herbert on July 20, will benefit our organization.

Area merchants were generous with their donations for door prizes. Our community gave its support by displaying the classic cars, making donations and purchasing from the food cart. Pepsi donated the drinks. We appreciate all who participated in the event and the Brazil Times, Clay City News and Tribune-Star for the excellent publicity.

In addition, we’re truly thankful for a generous check from the Elks. Riddell National Bank also gave us a donation which is sincerely appreciated.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our area churches who give financial support for our mission of providing basic affordable housing. The continuing support of our community makes it possible for Habitat to build homes, build hope and change lives one family at a time.
