RONN MOTT: Snowball 2

The wife and I really struggle to keep our cats warm and safe during these very cold winter days. That said, our two male cats, Magic and Mellow, love romping and playing in fresh, fallen snow. They have a blast jumping up into the air, chasing each other through the snow and pouncing on anything that escapes the winter blanket and gets blown by the wind across the yard.

Mellow, our golden Tabby, seems to really relish this play-time activity and he doesn’t appear to mind the cold. Or, he can endure it longer than the other two. Our little female seems to be more inclined to sit in a window watching the activity while staying inside and staying warm. A smart cat.

I have been watching the snow piling up, admiring the beauty of the park and admiring those who want to get out in it, but I understand it is a rare and beautiful thing. And if you dress warmly enough you really can admire that which Mother Nature lays upon the dark ground of winter … turning it into a snow-filled thing of wonder.

The dark side of all of these adjectives about the beauty of the event is looking out at my little car. It is now just a white mound, totally covered, looking more like an ancient burial ground mound covered with white snow instead of soil. Of course, early on the snow filled up our satellite dish receiver and everything disappeared from view. Not a good thing. My wife has an old window cleaner with an extension and, with my assistance, she was able to clean off the snow from the receiver and the voice of play-by-play announcers would fill the air in the family room.

We still face, as I am writing this, the bitter cold of that blast of arctic air that has been promised. So while our little guys (cats) enjoy the snow, they will not enjoy the below-zero temperatures or below-zero wind chill. There is no explaining to cats, in anything they will understand, why they cannot go out and survive in this weather. It’s just too cold.

So, this winter burst of snow and temperature is really the beauty and the beast. The nice way snow covers all the dirty things is the beauty and the beast is, of course, that very, very cold weather that keeps our energetic cats inside with explanations they do not understand.

I know from the calendar that we’re only about three months away from spring, but the heart of the winter still lies ahead of us. So I’ll try to enjoy the obvious things about it and try not to show my anger when my brother calls from Florida to let me know it’s 74 degrees and he’s planning to go fishing.

I’ve never been much of a fisherman but I have to say fishing is sounding better and better with every snowstorm.
