RONN MOTT: Snow-clad Collett

Like many of you, I woke up this morning to a world that mirrors the song, “It’s a Marshmallow World.” The world was not only white it was a whipped cream coconut cake, or taffeta wedding dress white. Early on, looking out on the Park, it said, “Look at me, don’t I look good in my white dress of snow?” And, I said, “Boy, do you ever!”

There’s always something that catches my eye in the Park. I don’t always write about everything, but on days like this, snow covered and cold, sitting and looking out … I thought for sure I’d see something of interest.

A mother and father were out in the snow in the Park with what looked like a 3-year-old boy. (He may have been 2 or 4, but he was in that age category.) The little boy had been pulled along on a sled by his father. The snow was a wet snow and made perfect snowballs. The little boy obviously wasn’t blessed at his age with a lot of snowball experience so the mother picked up the boy, helped him with his snowball and ran up close to where the father was standing.

Whack! The little boy scored a hit and everybody laughed. It was the kind of thing that only a far-away observer could enjoy. It was a family thing, and the family was enjoying it. A close-by observer, not a family member, would have only spoiled this innocent, winter time, snow-filled fun. I smiled.

A young mother came along pushing a youngster in a carriage enjoying the exercise and letting the child see the wonderment of all the snow. It was an unusual carriage … small wheels in the front and much larger wheels in back. They were getting along the sidewalks quite easily and adding to the fun on a Saturday morning with a snow blanket and my favorite park.

I have to share with you something I saw before the snow came down. I was driving behind a van, or maybe it was an SUV, but it had interesting bumper stickers. The bumper sticker on the left praised the fact that their child had never missed a single day of school. The bumper sticker on the right told the entire world their child was an honor student. They were obviously proud of their child. Up near the back window a rather narrow sticker with a drawing of a German Shepherd made me laugh so hard I almost had to pull over. Written on the sticker with the drawing of a handsome German Shepherd was this: “My German Shepherd is smarter than my honor student.” I really laughed hard at that.

The snow makes things look so clean and white. And when it isn’t blowing around, it does resemble a rather large blanket. So, this Saturday morning before many people were out and the snow was white and clean, Collett Park just screamed, “Look at me!” And I did. A treat on a cold, snow-filled Saturday morning.
