Pot use getting little attention

The results of the May 23 readers poll about lowering the DUI alcohol levels once again showed how our society looks at the damage alcohol does and turns their head. But if those same people saw someone burning a joint while driving, would they report the driver? Would they think that is more dangerous because he smokes weed?

I think this is another good example of the hypocritical thinking that has infected this country. Recovery First.com states that 30 people die each day in alcohol-related auto accidents. At 2court

info.ca.gov they state that eight teens die every day in car crashes and they are four times more likely to be killed in an auto crash than adults.

While one-fifth of auto fatalities are teens, they account for 6 percent of licensed drivers in the country.

In 2003, teens represented 13 percent of auto fatalities, but they made up just 10 percent of the entire population in this country.

Pot is not even close to doing as much damage to society on a constant yearly basis and it’s illegal, so why is alcohol not illegal as well?

I will say again that the CDC and the AMA state alcohol is the most abused drug in this country, not pot.

Beware of thieves initiating scams

Recently I received a phone call from one who identified himself as one from the Federal Criminal Investigation department and related to the Internal Revenue service, and told me that I did not pay some tax I owe to the IRS. He said that the IRS gave me many notices but I ignored them and because of that an arrest warrant was issued against me and I would be arrested if I did not pay and resolve the problem immediately.

I was surprised, as I paid the taxes on time and I was never told by the IRS or anybody that I owe any tax. He said that he has all the papers to show that I did not respond to those notices. His name was Don Lawson and his phone number was 732-328-2295.

On his instruction I called 732-584-2698, when a man responded but refused to tell me anything about the tax as he was only the collector of due taxes.

I told him that I would pay the due tax of $1,986.20 by check but he said that they do not accept any check and I would have to go to Walmart or Kroger to buy a green money back card and send the money, and if I do not send the money within an hour the arrest warrant would be released for my arrest and I would be in the jail.

I talked to my accountant who prepares my tax return, who told me that they are not from the IRS but are a group of thieves. So I did nothing, but after two hours a lady called me and threatened to release the arrest warrant. I told her that I would call the police and I would contact the FBI or other authority and the IRS about them.

By telling lies and threatening the people, they are stealing money from innocent people. I would like to warn my fellow citizens to report to the police if these thieves would call them.
