RONN MOTT: The country is not the NRA

It’s the United States of America, not the United States of the National Rifle Association. But hey, if that’s your poison, maybe it will change.

In the last election I read where the NRA spent $25 million on candidates. Seven million of it went to support Republican candidates. The rest of it, $18 million, went to attract Democrats. Why all of this money? They have, roughly, four million people in their membership and it would seem if all of them gave money, you would have quite a bit. But they have gone to bat with such stalwart Republican conservatives as Charles and David Koch and other Republican conservatives. Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform is on the board of the NRA. What does the NRA have to do with Americans for Tax Reform or those who are against raising taxes?

It would seem nothing … nothing at all. But the truth lies around another corner.

The NRA, despite what it says, is not concerned about your right to own weapons, the Second Amendment, or this great American myth that a man with loaded guns is going to keep a bad army from attacking us. We had soldier volunteers in the Revolutionary War, the Mexican War, in the Civil War, the Spanish American War, and after that it was men who were in organized militias sponsored by the government and then none at all. The truth is the NRA and their right-wing allies want to take over the country. They’ll raise thunder about your right to carry a semiautomatic guns, they will supposedly take the high ground and raise a ton of angst about abortions, and they’ll spread hate and stories about immigrants and other cultures taking over America.

They don’t really care whether or not you carry a weapon, how big it is, or anything else. They are fighting mad that Mitt Romney, who looked like he came out of central casting for the role of president, was soundly beaten. In spite of his good looks, his pedigree of Republicanism, he could not win the election. In fact, in spite of billions of dollars spent trying to get him elected, he failed miserably.

That has not slowed the right-wing down, the guns are a story line that stir people up and they’re so afraid they will not only lose the White House forever, but perhaps America will see through all of this and fill Congress with people who stand against the right wing.
