Honoring the memories of Suffragettes

On Aug. 26, 2012, women celebrated the 92nd anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment affording women the right to  vote. On Monday, Aug. 27, in true suffragette fashion, the League of Women Voters of Vigo County co-sponsored a Women’s Equality Day March. There are so many women who came together to make this dream a reality. We wish to thank the members of the steering committee; Bionca Gambill, Ellen Reeves, Crystal Reynolds, Valerie Hart-Craig, Marsha Miller and Kasey Smith.

Inspirational remarks and informative speeches were given by Ann Short-Chirhart of the ISU History Department, Catherine O’Connor of Planned Parenthood, Valerie Hart-Craig of the Terre Haute Branch NAACP, Mary Hagan and Mrs. Cheri Bradley.

Special thanks and appreciation go to Indiana State University President Dr. Dan Bradley, ISU Risk Management and Safety Department and numerous other ISU departments for their cooperation and assistance with the march activities. Thank you to the senior ladies in the Social Work Program who chose voter registration for their community engagement program.

All participants were encouraged to bring toiletry items for donation to CODA and Next Step. The donations were numerous. Thank you, everyone, for your generosity.

We would like to thank AAUW, Caboodle Cupcakes, DeBaun Funeral Home, ISU Center for Community Engagement, Jeff Lorick, LaRysa Images Photography, Roxy Studios, Sally’s Beauty Supply, Boo’s Crossroads Cafe, Cunningham Memorial Library, Frey Law Firm, ISU Women’s Studies Program, Ivy Tech-Wabash Valley, Margaret Banker Fund WVCLC, NAACP, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Claudia and Danny Tanoos, Plaza North Big Lots, Kool Smiles at Plaza North and the Terre Haute Kroger Stores for their sponsorship and donations.

A special thanks to Bob Brown, Kroger north manager, for the donation of yellow roses. The yellow rose, being a symbol of the Suffragette Movement, was given to those ladies in attendance who had voted continuously for 35 to 65 years.

Most of all, thank you to all the marchers who came to show their respect for all those ladies who came before us. It is important to remember the Suffragettes’ hard work, service and sacrifice that afford all women, since Aug. 26,1920, the right to vote.

We can all honor their memory by participating and voting in all the elections to come.
