Tribune-Star Editorial: Renovation of courthouse proud day for Vigo County
With internal renovations of their courthouse complete, the people of Vigo County can be proud of the dual statement they’ve made on behalf of modernization and historic preservation.
The four-year, $13.65 million construction project officially came to an end late last week as the doors re-opened on one of the community’s most prized architectural treasures.
Renovation had become an essential step in order for the late 19th century building to function efficiently in the 21st century. Everything from new restroom facilities to upgraded communications technology was needed. In order for the public’s business to be conducted there in the future, the building’s interior required lots of attention. Fortunately, it got it.
The Vigo County Courthouse has long been the most striking visual landmark in Terre Haute. Its towering presence on Third Street at the western edge of the downtown business district defines Terre Haute’s skyline — to residents as well as visitors — like no other structure.
The exterior has received major renovations over the years, including refurbishing of the dome itself. Until now, however, the interior did not keep pace.
In addition to facility improvements, the renovation has simply made the interior more attractive. The institutional gray and green paint is mostly gone. The decor is far more colorful and, yes, cheerful.
It was an expensive project. But the historical significance of this 120-year-old building that has long served as the center of county government deserved this type of attention.
We applaud the county commissioners — past and present — for leading the charge to complete the renovation, and we commend the taxpayers of Vigo County for their enormous and invaluable contribution as well.
The courthouse is now not only an important piece of our past, but a critical piece of our county’s foundation for the future.
