Goode strikes sour note with attack

The attack on Congressman Brad Ellsworth by his up-and-coming opponent in Friday’s Tribune-Star just continues to illustrate the ongoing misguided conceptions concerning government by a select few. Democracy was created under the principle of government of the people, by the people, for the people. Mr. Greg Goode’s accusations of “multiple messages for multiple audiences” typifies the ongoing concept of “government by a few, for a few.”

By his position, Mr. Ellsworth is demonstrating that he honors the commitment to the constituents that elected him to Congress in the first place. That commitment being “our voice” in Washington. Perhaps he has a personal favorite, but he has stated that he will cast his vote based on the wishes of the voters of the 8th District. Now, isn’t this the way Democracy is supposed to be?

Mr. Goode, I propose you withdraw from the November election now. You have indicated very clearly that the people of the 8th District are not your concern; instead you prefer to “dance” to the music of the Republican Party. Quite frankly, your tune is off key, and the song you are singing will never make the top 40.

Qualifications only criteria for choice

I watch quite a few documentary-type programs such as “60 Minutes”, “Dateline NBC”, “48 Hours Mystery”, etc. I have seen reports on many real-life trials and interviews with the jurors afterwards. The reasons many jurors give for their decisions are far too often ludicrous and totally illogical. A perfect example is the Steidl/Whitlock trial in Paris, Ill., several years ago. Both men have since (and rightfully so) been released from prison.

There are multiple other examples that would take up an entire newspaper to cite! It’s unbelievable to me the number of cases that have been overturned since the inception of DNA evidence! Many convicted people have even been executed only to be proven innocent after it’s too late. That requires a little more than an oops!

By the same token, far too many people vote for governmental candidates for all the wrong reasons. They vote (for or against) because of race, religion, physical appeal or maybe a catch phrase that some speech writer concocted. How naive can you be? The only criteria that “should” be taken into consideration is qualifications. Virtually all of today’s presidential candidates are making promises that, if they were elected, wouldn’t have the power or authority to fulfill. I suppose nowadays it’s impossible to be elected on your own merits. You have to degrade your opponent as well. Isn’t that a shame?

One prospective candidate is a complete clone of George Dubya! Can we survive another four years of Bushism? I can hardly stand another minute of it.

As the president himself said, “This isn’t rocket surgery we’re talking about”. Think about it, America!

Great years at Chauncey Rose

I have served the last 10 years as principal at Chauncey Rose Middle School of the Vigo County School Corp. The years have gone by in the blink of an eye. I am excited and ready to begin another chapter in my professional career as the principal at Davis Park Elementary School. I am ready to use the knowledge and skills that I have had the opportunity to gain with all of the Chauncey Rose school community at yet another great VCSC school.

I am so blessed and thankful to have had the opportunity to work at Chauncey Rose. I will greatly miss the entire Chauncey Rose community. Chauncey Rose will always have a special place in my heart. Claire Marchese, principal, and Gary Dellmo, assistant principal, for the 2008-2009 school year, will be great leaders for Chauncey Rose and will, along with the staff, continue to provide a quality education for students.

It has been an honor to lead and work with such hard-working students, supportive parents, dedicated staff, committed teachers, invaluable community partners, and the VCSC administrators and staff. Thank you, Superintendent Tanoos and the VCSC leaders, Chauncey Rose Middle School students, parents, teachers, staff, and community, for all of your kindness and support.

Thanks for the help

The seniors and manager of Providence Place Apartments in West Terre Haute would like to thank the men of Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Gamma Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Nu, Theta Xi, and Triangle from Rose-Hulman for helping us with a “spring clean-up” of our grounds and buildings on April 27.

Not-for-profit organizations such as ours really rely on the help of groups such as the Interfraternity Council at Rose-Hulman to maintain a clean, safe and affordable community for senior living. Thanks again.
