Cemetery repairs coming this spring

This is in response to the letter from Christy Daugherty in the Tribune-Star of Thursday, April 24.

I wish to inform her, all Otter Creek Township citizens, and any persons with family members buried in Markle Cemetery of the facts involved. Since the date of the accident — Jan. 12, 2008 — when the damaged bench and headstones occurred, I have been in contact with the Vigo County sheriff’s department and the Indiana State Police. Through their assistance, I was given the information needed about the person who demolished the headstones and bench. Fortunately, he had insurance that would cover the damage.

On the other hand, in locating a company which repairs and restores headstones, I was able to obtain a company, Stonehugger Cemetery Restoration from Nashville. When inquiring about the repairs, I was given an estimate and a time in which they could render the work needed. Stonehugger informed me they would not be able to begin and complete the work until the warm weather months of spring.

Christy Daugherty mentioned that Markle Cemetery “may not be rich or the nicest as some of the other around.” I would like to inform Ms. Daugherty, the taxpayers of Otter Creek Township, and any township in the state of Indiana of the protocol concerning this type of incident.

Some time ago, Indiana legislators gave the responsibility and required all township trustees to take over and care for any (so-called) abandoned cemeteries at the expense of the taxpayers of that township. As trustee, I am trying to do the best with the least amount of expense to make the cemeteries look presentable and honor those buried there.

Ms. Daugherty, in the future, after you write your letter to the editor, if you and any other persons have a concern for Markle or cemeteries in Otter Creek Township, you may contact me at Otter Creek Township Trustee’s Office (812) 466-4020.

Thanks to all who said ‘no’ to alcohol

Here we go again! An alcohol ordinance for Fairbanks Park — bravo to those councilmen and woman who voted against this ordinance.

I am shocked as are many others with this decision. We know many people who are greatly concerned about this issue. Did those of you who voted for this give any thought to what this will do — drinking and fights and many other issues happening at Fairbanks Park?

We have already had issues in the park and drinking will not help the cause. Where do you plan on people parking? Have you really thought about all of these issues? I think NOT!

Mayor Bennett, thanks for all you have done since being in office. Thanks for your being against this ordinance also. Bless you and the councilmen Chalos, Mullican and Loudermilk for voting against this. Also thanks to Terry Modisett and Kathy Chalos Miller for speaking against this situation. George Azar abstained, and I understand this.

There goes Fairbanks Park, and what else will transpire?
