The Tribune-Star

Goodbye … from Pino’s Il Sonetto

It is time for me to move on … and that means time for Pino’s to close.

It has been an amazing journey, and I wanted to take this moment to say “Thank You” … to the universities, the businesses, and, most of all, the people of this wonderful community. We have an abundance of exceptionally giving and supportive folks in Terre Haute. Whether we met at the restaurant, soccer field, tennis court, theater, or simply engaged conversation at the grocery store, I owe you a debt of gratitude.

To also my loyal and hardworking staff, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Our success has been your success, and I will always hold dear our bond. You have been my strength, Kathy, Pedro, Jeshua, Josh, Wendy, Susan, Eric, Kim, Tonya, Jeremy, Don, Hannah, Danny, Steve, Doug, Will, and, my unflappable son — Da. A big and very personal Thank You.

And Pino, my one and only Pino, whose strength and vision enabled this journey. Thank You, Pino, my love, for an incredible encore. May his light continue to shine for all of you as it will for me.

Grazie tanto, tanto, tanto,

Pino’s final curtain call will be the evening’s end, Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006.

We have seen rise of the TV Taliban

How refreshing that the Taliban is alive and well in West Central Indiana!

Our government brags that among other things, our invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan brought the citizens of those countries their first opportunities to access the Internet, read uncensored newspapers, and to watch the programming of their choice in television. Too bad that third opportunity is not available to us in the Wabash Valley.

Recently, NBC announced a new series titled “The Book of Daniel.” From the previews, it looked mildly interesting, possibly funny and entertaining, and probably unlikely to last long in the commercial-driven ratings battles. I probably would not have watched it, at least not frequently because I enjoy other preferred programs in the same time slot on CBS.

However, as a combat veteran I never thought I would be DENIED one of the rights that I fought for — that tens of thousands of other men and women are now fighting and dying for on behalf of citizens of countries in which we don’t belong: The simple right to view entertainment of my choice on the public airwaves!

Imagine my surprise! The cowards who run WTWO-TV (NBC affiliate Channel 2) caved in to pressure from the Bible-thumping fundamentalists (our very own Taliban) and announced that they would not be airing any segments of “The Book of Daniel.”

Fundamentalist religious extremists of ALL faiths are a threat to everything we hold dear in the country; everything generations of Americans have fought and died for. They have no sense of humor, no humanity, and no concern for others except to attempt to make those “others” believe and act as THEY do. They are not even in the majority — by a long shot — but they are loud and obnoxious, and when our government and our media allow them to dictate actions that affect all of us, our nation cannot long survive.

Rely on Israel to lead the way

In answer to John Torphy’s recent letter, since Bush declared Iraq, Iran and North Korea the axis of evil and then attacked Iraq, what would you expect Iran and North Korea to do to defend themselves?

In the case of Israel, their intelligence is better than ours. They took out Iraq’s nuclear facilities before it became a threat. They will probably do the same to Iran if it becomes a threat. If they have to, they have atomic weapons to use and have the will to use them.

Before we start anything else in the Middle East we should ask Israel where the real threats are, or let them take care of it.
