On and off the course: Sycamores seeded sixth heading into MVC golf tourney

TERRE HAUTE — It wasn’t too long ago that Indiana State University didn’t even have a women’s golf team.

Now in its sixth year, ISU is hosting the Missouri Valley Conference women’s golf championships today through Tuesday at The Country Club of Terre Haute.

Fans are invited to attend free of charge, but parking is limited, so carpool if you can. Spectator carts can be rented for $25. There are many advantageous spots to sit and watch all the players go by, including near the putting green, where you could watch the 18th and ninth greens and the 10th tee.

Tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees. Pairings for tee times on the first day were established by the pre-championship coaches’ poll. Indiana State is ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll, so the Sycamores will tee off on hole No. 1 with tee times beginning at 9:20.

Missouri State was the unanimous choice for first place with 100 points in the coaches’ poll. Wichita State was second with 79, Southern Illinois third with 78. Illinois State, the four-time defending champion, was ranked fourth in this year’s poll with 72. Northern Iowa was fifth with 67 votes. Bradley, Drake, Creighton and Evansville fill spots seven to 10 and will tee off on the back nine, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Pairings for subsequent rounds will be based on the previous days’ rounds. Winner of the MVC tournament will get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Country Club’s course was designed by William Diddle, a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. It opened in 1900 and has undergone many changes, but it’s still very close to its original design. The course measures 6,272 yards from the longest tees, which is where the MVC players will tee off from for the most part.

For safety reasons, and playability reasons, they will tee off from the back of the forward tees on a few holes, such as Nos. 6, 5 and 13. Hole No. 12, which plays as a par-5 for women and a difficult par-4 for men, will be played as a par-5, but from the back tees.

ISU has a young team this year with two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors making up its top five players. Christina Beyerl and Emily Dixon are the “senior members” of the team — as juniors. Both are from Indianapolis, where Christina played golf for Hamilton Southeastern, and is majoring in psychology. Emily played for Zionsville in her high school days and is majoring in athletic training.

McCall Christopher is a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., also majoring in athletic training. Amanda Smith is a freshman from Canton, Ohio, majoring in sports and recreation. Gina Della Camera is a freshman from St. Louis, majoring in business. They are coached by Gregory Towne.

Come out and support the ISU women’s golf team at the Country Club this week. You’ll be quite impressed by how far these women can hit the ball and how good they are at the short game! Another way you can support these young ladies is to bring junior players to their free golf clinic at Rea Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Lunch will be included too, so that would be a great way to get your junior golfer ready for some summertime fun.
