BRAZIL — Ruth S. Carter died unexpectedly at her home in Brazil, on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010. She was born Sept. 1, 1919, in Dick Johnson Township, Ind., as the daughter of John Henry Sampson Sr. and Frances Houk Sampson. Following graduation from high school she graduated from Indiana State University. She married Ray A. Carter on Aug. 22, 1948, in Brazil. She taught grades 1 through 4 for 36 years, at the Pinkley, Ala., Perth, Bee Ridge, and Meridian Street schools. Following retirement, Ruth enjoyed making candy and sharing it with family and friends. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Jan. 11, 2005; brother, John Henry Sampson; sister, Mary Skelton; and two nieces, Patricia Skelton and Julie Stevenson.
Ruth and Ray were the loving parents of one daughter, Jean Ann Carter, who survives. Ruth also is survived by one sister, Jennie King of Clarinda, Iowa; and brothers-in-law, Roy Carter and Russell Stoms, both of Brazil. Ruth thought very highly of all her nieces and nephews; Bob (Nancy) Sampson of Terre Haute, Larry (Sharon) Sampson, Ted (Linda) Sampson, Sue (Chet) Stevenson, Jim (Tonya) Sampson, John Sampson, all of Brazil, Mary C. Skelton and Lucy Skelton, both of Indianapolis, and Donald (Jane) King, and Shirley King, all of Clarinda.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor Steve Ford officiating.
