Velma Jean Mesaeh, 77, of Terre Haute, passed away at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in Meadows Manor East. She had worked at St. Anthony Hospital, Terre Haute Regional Hospital, various nursing homes, and as a private care provider. Velma was born Jan. 15, 1935, in Terre Haute, to Elmer O. Payne and Lena M. (Pickens) Payne.
She is survived by daughters, Kreta Stevenson and her husband Doug of Fowler, and Margaret Gamble and husband Scott of Maryland; sons, Mark Mesaeh and his wife Donna and Daniel Mesaeh and his wife Pam, all of Terre Haute, William J. Mesaeh and his wife Lori of Brazil, and James Mesaeh and his wife Ann of Terre Haute; sister, Evelyn Cohoon of Florida; grandchildren, Stacey, Elizabeth, Steven, Christopher, Marc, Sarah, Matthew, Jeremy, Lindsay, Cory, William, Chelsea, Corey, Collin, Caden, Kerri, Steven, Michael, and Trinity; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Ray Mesaeh; grandchildren, Alexander Michael, Andrew William, Peyton Elizabeth, Shannon Christine, and Christina Marie; and sisters, Nina White and Virginia Rehmel.
Velma was an active member in Ladies Auxiliary of the Loyal Order of the Moose, where she held the following positions: Academy of Friendship, Star Recorder, Senior Regent, and College Regent. She also was active in the American Legion, Senior Citizens Band, and Catholic Charities.
Visitation is today, Jan. 4, 2013, from 4 until 9 p.m. in Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with a Women of the Moose Walkthrough at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with her grandson, Pastor William Mesaeh Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Moose Heart International or Alzheimer’s Association.
