David Nicholas “Nick” Smith, 90, of Terre Haute, passed away on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, in Countryside Meadows Health Care Center located in Avon. David was born on April 23, 1923, in Terre Haute, to the late Lemuel Smith and Etolia Holt Smith.
David was a graduate of Wiley High School, where he was known as a track star. David earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana State Teacher’s College. He was a United States Army veteran. He achieved the rank of First Sergeant at the age of 19.
David married Barbara “Teedee” Anderson (deceased September 1973) on June 28, 1946. To this union was born 13 children.
He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Smith Dowdy; all of his children, Cheryl Gordon, Stephoni Pace (Erica), David Smith Jr. (Barbara), Anthony “Tony” Smith (Betsy), Eve Smith, Keith Smith, Nina Smith, Eric Smith, Brian Smith (Dorothy), Celeste Ross-Smith, Vincent Smith (Regina), Rodney Smith (Dawn), and Christopher “Chris” Smith (Dione); 36 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three cousins, several nieces and nephews, and one special neighbor, Mr. R.D. Lucas.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George “Buddy” Smith, and Joseph “Joe” Smith.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 1400 Oak St., in Terre Haute, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with funeral services at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
