Gary A. West, 75, of Linton, went to live with Jesus at 5:54 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Greene County General Hospital. He was born March 19, 1938, in Lyons, the son of Charles M. and Rachel M. (Hale) West. He married Elaine Bovenschen on Aug. 16, 1963, and celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with her, having been married 50 years and three days when he passed away.
He was a U.S. Army veteran from 1961-1963, stationed in Germany. He retired in June 1994, from the Linton General Electric Plant. He worked part-time at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home from 1995 to 2010. He was a member of Olive Branch Church for more than 40 years where he led the AWANA Club for more than 30 years; he helped with Vacation Bible School, Sunday school and church camp. He played the bass guitar with the Bovenschen family for 35 years. He worked as a lay minister in the prison ministry for many years, served as president of the Greene County Gospel Association for several years and played music with West & Friends.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine S. (Bovenschen) West of Linton; a daughter, Tina (John) Crusie of Sullivan; a son, Rick West of Linton; a brother, Craig West of Dugger; six grandchildren, Travis, Brittany, Keith, Derek, Jade and Blake; and two great-grandchildren, Zack and Zoey. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gene West.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Myron Young officiating. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery. The Linton American Legion will conduct graveside military rites. Visitation is 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and 11 a.m. until services Thursday. Online condolences can be made at:
