Deborah Wailly

TERRE HAUTE — Deborah Wailly, 101, was taken home in God’s arms on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Davis Gardens Health Center. She was born on Jan. 16, 1912, in Brazil, to Aline and Louis Wailly.

Deborah, affectionately called “Taunte Deborah” by her family, was preceded in death by her parents; and all her siblings, Isadore Pinour of Kentucky, Aline Lewzader of California, and Louis Wailly, Pauline Toulson, Eloise Stevens, and Amelia Stevens, all of Terre Haute. Her family came here from France right before she was born.

She is survived by special nieces, Jill Waters and Angie Adams of Terre Haute and Amy (Stevens) McGinness of Illinois; and special nephew, Al Stevens of New Jersey.  Jill was her Angel on Earth. She is survived by a large extended family of nieces and nephews.

She was a dedicated disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a member of Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She loved to sing and teach Sunday School. After her first job at Mewhinney Candy in Terre Haute, she worked in bakeries until her retirement. She worked at McFall’s Bakery on Ohio, Great Scot Bakery, and worked for many years at Parks Purity Pies on N. 25th St.  She made beautiful, delicious, elaborate wedding cakes and her family enjoyed the benefits of her love for baking with frequent pies, cakes, pastries, and “gaufrettes” (a French waffle cookie). The kitchen always had a fresh loaf of Taunte Deborah’s homemade bread. Her baking skills were unparalleled even though her vision was impaired. She loved growing sorrel for French oseille soup, or as her pastor called it, “that green soup.”

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church. A funeral ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Barbour Avenue UMC. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Barbour Avenue UMC.  Deborah’s family wishes to thank Helen, Beneva, Lynn, Cherie, and the staff at Davis Gardens for the love and care they showed Taunte Deborah.
