TERRE HAUTE —
David Howard Cox, 61, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, in St. Vincent’s Seton Hospital in Indianapolis, following complications from West Nile Virus. Dave was born Feb. 19, 1952, in Terre Haute, to Howard and Dolores Harden Cox. He had previously been the editor of the Terre Haute Tribune-Star and was most recently employed by the Sisters of Providence as the media relations manager.
Dave enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, taking walks and riding bicycles. He was also an avid sports fan, especially of the St. Louis Cardinals, and he also enjoyed reading, crafts and woodworking. Most of all, Dave enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a 1970 graduate of Schulte High School.
Dave was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, James McKinney; and one stillborn sister, Mary Elizabeth Cox. Dave is survived by his wife of 42 years, Brenda Moore Cox; one son, Brian Cox and his wife, Christine, of Chandler, Ariz.; one daughter, Sara Cox, of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; one brother, Paul Cox and his wife, Terri, of Farmersburg, Ind.; one sister, Carolyn Tapy and her husband, Ronald “Jay,” of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Zachary and Gavin Cox of Chandler, Ariz.; nieces and nephews, Jennifer and Megan Cox of Farmersburg, Ind.; Jarad Tapy and his wife, Angela, of Terre Haute; Eric Tapy and his wife, Cathy, of Cincinnati; Amanda Taylor and her husband, Brian, of Terre Haute; Eric O’Hair and his wife, C.J., of Crawfordsville, Ind.; and Kenzie O’Hair of Terre Haute; one great-niece, Ella Tapy, of Terre Haute; and one great-nephew, Ryker Cox, of Farmersburg, Ind. He is survived by his father- and mother-in-law, Myron and Lucy Moore, as well as his sister- and brother-in-law, Becky and Ernie O’Hair, all of Crawfordsville, Ind. His mother, Dolores McKinney, also survives.
A funeral mass for Dave will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, with Father Dan Hopcus officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, at the church, with a prayer service at 7. The family wishes that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Sisters of Providence Ministries, Office of Congregational Advancement, 1 Sisters of Providence Road, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
The family would also like to extend a deep thank-you to the nurses and staff at Union Hospital, Indiana University Medical Center and St. Vincent’s Seton Specialty Hospital for their care and compassion in taking care of Dave.
