Louis F. Wailly

TERRE HAUTE — Louis F. Wailly, Ph.D., 84, of Terre Haute, Ind., died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Regional Hospital.

He was born to Louis A. and Dorothy Sneider Wailly on July 11, 1929, in Terre Haute. Louis graduated from Garfield High School in 1947 and received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics/chemistry/physics from Indiana State University. His advanced degrees included a master of science in chemistry/physics from Indiana State University, a master of science in radiological diagnostics from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in radiology and nuclear/medical applications from Colorado State University.

He married Barbara Olivero in 1952 and relocated to several states while serving in the USAF/NASA and later as a medical consultant.

Louis started his career as a chemist for Campbell’s Soup, and after completing college became a math and science teacher in the Terre Haute school system. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force/NASA (with 26 years of military service) and worked in several areas of expertise related to radiation and its effects on the body and equipment. While teaching at the Air Force Academy he was the director of research for the life and behavioral sciences department. As a medical consultant, Louis specialized in the setup, finance and business operations of radiation oncology clinics in addition to consulting on patient treatments. He was associated with and served on several national committees, including the Office of Scientific Research, Bureau or Rad Health (FDA), NASA, EPA and the Atomic Energy Commission (now the Nuclear Regulatory Commission).

Louis was a private pilot earlier in life and was enthusiastic about aviation and the space program. He was an avid outdoorsman and took every opportunity to hunt and fish with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling to pursue these passions and visit loved ones. Louis was proud of his daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing in the younger generations’ activities and accomplishments. He never lost his enthusiasm for the advancements in science and technology. In his last days, while doing Facetime on a cellphone with his grandchildren, he marveled at the changes he had seen and took part in during his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Cheryl (John) Hayes, Karen Wailly, Janice (Mark) Webster and Michelle (Matt) Misterka. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters Frances (Jerry) Eder and Mary Wailly; brothers Larry Rice and Ronald Wailly; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Wailly; his parents; and sisters Lue Amy Mann, Eloise Girton and Dorothy Stevenson.

There will be a private memorial taking place for the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of DeBaun Funeral Homes & Crematory.
