John Patrick Leusing Jr.

John Patrick Leusing Jr., 62, entered the heavenly gates on Nov 26, 2013, to be with his mother, Elizabeth Leusing, who passed away on Nov 10, 2013. John passed away at the Fort Mohave Medical Center with his sister Mary Ann and her husband Joe by his side. John was born Jan 6, 1951, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Elizabeth Margaret and John Patrick Leusing Sr.

John bought a home in Topock, Ariz., 10 years ago to get away from the cold weather in Indiana. He was a passenger in a car accident that left him paralyzed when he was 19 years old. Because of the love and devotion of his mother and younger sister Margaret, he was able to learn how to drive on his own with hand controls. His neighbors admired him for what he had accomplished in the things he would do from his wheelchair: work on his car and his house, and shop for himself. His disability never kept him from trying to do something. We were so proud of John.

When John was younger you would see him pole-vaulting in the backyard. He loved sports, especially baseball when he played for the Medics. He taught Margaret all about sports and she loved it. He was a special part of her life while they were growing up. He also taught his niece, Amy, how to play chess — she would play in tournaments at school. John graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1969.

John had called his mother the day that she passed and told us he wanted to come home. He is our third angel that will forever be in our hearts.

John is survived by his sisters, Margaret Leusing, and Mary Ann Carter and husband Joseph; a nephew, Brent Barnhart; and a niece, Sheila Church. John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joan Leusing; and a neice, Amy Spivey.

Memorial contributions can be made in John’s memory to the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund or the charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life for John and Elizabeth Leusing will be with their immediate family on Christmas day. Arizona Funeral Home & Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
