Velma Jean Davis Phillips, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in Union Hospital. Velma was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Indianapolis, to James Tate and Opal Hord Tate. Velma attended Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, and she enjoyed spending time with her family and maintaining her lifetime friendships. She had formerly worked in the City Controller’s Office and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Robert Paul Davis, who died in 1957; her second husband, Robert Phillips, who died in 1985; her daughter, Deloris Ann Trainer, who died in 1998; and her companion, Victor Ketcham, who died in 2012.
Velma is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Debra K. Davis, and Robert and Debra R. Davis, all of Terre Haute; one sister, Alta Walls and her husband Robert of Terre Haute; and a brother, James E. Tate and his wife Sally of Shepherdsville, Ky. She is survived by six grandchildren, Angie Luttrell, Michelle Rene Kougl, Samantha Donnenhoffer and her husband Adam, Lisa Davis, Teresa Dalton and her husband Blake, and Justin Trainer. Survivors also include 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St. Visitation is 4 until 8 p.m. today, March 7, 2014, at the funeral home. The Rev.
