Sister Bernice Kuper

TERRE HAUTE — Sister Bernice Kuper, 91, died at 2:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Jasper, to William and Theresa Fritsch Kuper, and was baptized Anna Bernice. 

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 6, 1940, and received the name Sister Ann Bernice. She professed final vows Aug. 15, 1948. Sister earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. Of her 73 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 21 years in education in elementary and high schools in Indiana, Illinois and Oregon. She taught at St. Patrick, Terre Haute, from 1953 to 1959. In 1961, she was appointed Director of Novices and in 1971 she was elected to seven years of Congregation administration. In 1980, she became Pastoral Associate at St. John Parish in Newburgh, and ministered there for 13 years. Upon retirement in 1994, she served as part of the New Membership Team at the Motherhouse. Sister’s wisdom was shared in the congregation through her work in Formation Ministry and Spiritual Direction. In her later years she enjoyed spinning alpaca fiber and knitting scarves with the fiber.

Sister is survived by a sister, Dolores Habig of Jasper, as well as nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a brother, Maurice Kuper.

 The wake is on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., in the church, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. The Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home Wabash Avenue Chapel assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN. 47876.
