TERRE HAUTE —
Oscar DeWitt Long Sr., also known as “Sonnyman”, son of Joseph William and Adaleen Long, was born Sept. 18, 1941, in Terre Haute. He was the seventh child born of 11 children to this union.
He was preceded in death by both his parents; one granddaughter, Mindy Long; two brothers, Rudolph and Clyde Long; and two sisters, Juanita Sutton and Mayola Brown.
“Sonnyman” embarked upon a career at Alcan, formerly known as Anaconda Aluminum (Novelis), where he was employed for more than 34 years until his retirement in October 2002.
“Sonnyman” professed his hope in Christ while undergoing treatment at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis earlier this year. “Sonnyman” departed this earthly life on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 11:40 p.m. He is at peace with God now and rejoicing in his happy heavenly home.
“Sonnyman” leaves behind a legacy of love for his family and friends. Those left to cherish his memory are four sons, Rick Hampton (Marie) Irvine, Calif., Oscar Dewitt Long Jr. (aka Shared Amin Shah), Atlanta, Sidney Long (Angelina) Gardena, Calif., and Lorenzo Long (Billie) Terre Haute; two daughters, Charissa Antrobus, Indianapolis, and a very special compassionate, caring, loving daughter, Tiasha Long, Terre Haute; a special friend who was like a son, Ryan Thompson; brothers, Keith and Joseph Long Jr.; sisters, Violetta McGrone, Rosetta Moothery, Linda Waldon, and Roxie Rudy; 13 grandchildren, Marissa, Amina Zapora, Jordan Amir, Jasmine, Caitlin, Carissa, Lamonte, Kassidee, Aiden, Katie, Nahlee, Kyran, Elijah; one great-granddaughter, Hadasah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Interment is in Grandview Cemetery. Calling is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Russell Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
