ROCKVILLE — Chester T. Elder, 79, of Rockville, died at 6:26 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at Danville Regional Rehabilitation Center in Danville, Ind. He was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Indianapolis, to the late Hansford “Shorty” Elder and Evelyn Fout Elder. He was a skilled tradesman for the Chrysler Foundry in Indianapolis from 1964 to 1999.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Janet Payton Elder, whom he married Sept. 1, 1962, in Indianapolis; also surviving, one son, David Wayne Elder of Houston; one daughter, Denise Nichols of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Missy; He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Elder.
He attended Washington High School in Indianapolis and served four years with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He was ordained as a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Aug. 27, 1992. He was a member of the Immanuel Southern Baptist Church, in Rockville, and United Auto Workers local 550 at Indianapolis. He loved bowling and fishing.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, in Immanuel Southern Baptist Church, 3932 W. U.S. Highway 36, in Rockville, with the Rev. Mark Houvenagle officiating. Burial will follow in Phanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Wallace with military graveside honors by Parke County Veterans. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W.
