Helen Stigler Weber Scherb

TERRE HAUTE — It is with deep sadness, but also, a comforting sense of peace that the passing of Helen Stigler Weber Scherb is conveyed. Helen Mae Stigler was born in Cass Township/Clay County Indiana in 1920, to David Stigler and Anna Tressel Stigler.  She returned on January 24, 2014, after a final, long illness, to the embrace of all her family members who pre-deceased her.

Helen grew up with her brothers, Lynden Lee Stigler and Lester Joe Stigler and sisters, Lavina Katheryn (McClay) and Roxie Evelyn (Rentschler) on a lovely, old farm not far from Eel River. She attended Poland School, Brazil High School, and received a BS degree in Education, 1942, from (now) Indiana State University, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. In November of 1942, while teaching in Attica, IN, Helen was united in marriage with Joseph G.S. Weber, MD and moved to Terre Haute. While her husband established his medical practice, Helen reared four children who now survive her: Ann E. Dever (Luke); Joseph D. Weber; Daniel L. Weber (Barbara); Thomas C. Weber (Jeannie).

Helen was widowed in 1981, and in 1982 was married to Burton E. Scherb, MD who pre-deceased her in 2000.

Helen is also survived by five grandchildren, Kimberly Cline, DVM (Michael); Lesley C. Yerian (Neal); Daniel S. Osborn (Kerry); Sarah E. Weber; and David P. Weber, and seven great-grandchildren, Josephine, Elijah, and Eleanor Cline; Anna Catherine Yerian; Jenna Weber; and Gus Michael and Abram Osborn; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Though Helen lived all of her married life in Terre Haute, and traveled to faraway locales, she remained ‘the girl from Cass Township, and her heart was always fullest when she was in the country.

The Medical Auxiliary, Swope Alliance, League of Terre Haute, Allendale Country Club, Maple Avenue Methodist Church, Memorial United Methodist Church, Chapter K/PEO, and the ‘Showoffs’ were affiliations that Helen supported and greatly enjoyed her friends in the membership.

Helen’s unconventionality, generosity of spirit, and loving support of friends and family will be her legacy. And, as such, she will be long remembered and loved, and never truly die.

French Funeral Home, Brazil, IN, is in charge of arrangements with calling hours on Thursday, January 30, 2014, from 12 to 2 p.m. An informal service will follow with interment in The McCullough-Stigler Cemetery. At a later date, a memorial tree planting service will be held at the Poland Chapel in Poland, IN. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of choice or The Wabash Valley Community Foundation at 2901 Ohio Blvd., Terre Haute, IN 47803.
