Sister Frances Joan Baker

TERRE HAUTE — Sister Frances Joan Baker, 97, died at 5:59 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, in Lourdes Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Washington, Ind., on Feb. 23, 1916, to Frederick and Frances Rankel Baker and was baptized Rosemary.  

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 27, 1932, and professed final vows Aug. 15, 1939. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from Indiana State University. In her 81 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered as teacher for 52 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and North Carolina. In 1986 she moved to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, where she gave nine years of service at Woods Day Care/Preschool. When she left that ministry, she continued to give service to her sisters at the Motherhouse. Beginning in 2009, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.  

Sister Frances Joan was a gracious woman with a positive attitude and a peaceful spirit. She shared this inner peace with all she met. When She arrived at the Motherhouse in 1986, she accepted an assignment to be present in prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Adoration Chapel on Saturday mornings. She kept this commitment for 27 years, right up until her death.

Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by five brothers, Louis, Fred, Carl, Leo and Bill Baker; one sister, Fannie Clark; one half-sister, Henrietta Brown; and two half-brothers, Peter and George Braun.  

The wake is on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Home-Wabash Avenue Chapel assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.  47876.
