Karen Sue Jones, 65, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 12, 2013. She was born Jan. 9, 1948, in Terre Haute, to Eugene and Barbara (Smith) Jones. Karen was a school teacher for 38 years at the Zuni Indian Reservation and the Gallop School Corporation, in New Mexico, before retiring and returning to her hometown. During her years in New Mexico, Karen was very involved with community theater as a back stage director. She had the spirit of adventure. She enjoyed traveling with Turner Coaches. She shared her love of theater and traveling with her nieces and nephews. When she wasn’t exploring the world, Karen enjoyed crafting in her spare time.
Karen is survived by her sister, Kathy Harshbarger and husband David of Center Point; brothers, Ron Jones and companion Barbara Harlan of Cape Coral, Fla., and Dennis Jones of North Carolina; six nieces and nephews, Marc Riggs of Terre Haute, Jason Hinton of Center Point, Jeffrey Hinton and wife Kim of Palm Coast, Fla., Melissa Cather and husband Rick of St. Charles, Mo., Mike Jones of North Carolina and Kimberly Norwood and husband Marshall of North Carolina; and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, David Jones.
In accordance with Karen’s wishes, cremation was chosen. A celebration of Karen’s life will be 5 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2013, at Deming Park. A balloon release in Karen’s memory will take place during the celebration, feel free to bring a balloon with a personal message written on it. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Karen’s name to the organization of the donor’s choice. Roselawn Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
