Robert H. Phillips

TERRE HAUTE — Robert H. Phillips, 78, of Terre Haute, former local educator, passed away on April 27, 2013 at Union Hospital from complications of heart disease and diabetes. Bob was the former principal of Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary School during the years 1967-1986 and served as a teacher at Davis Park, Consolidated and Dresser Elementary Schools.

Born July 4, 1934, in Evansville, IN, Bob was the youngest child of Henry and Mabel Scifert Phillips. Bob graduated from Evansville’s Central High School in 1952 and was a leading cross country and track team member. Running, golf and basketball were his sports. He attended Indiana State University and received his B.S., Master’s and 6th-Year Degrees from there and was a member of the cross country and track teams. He met his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann, while a college student. They were married at Maplewood Christian Church and remained members there. Daughter Nancy Phillips, DDS., lives in Tallahassee, FL.

Bob will be remembered for his ability to inspire and encourage students, his caring ways and enthusiastic interest in teaching and student development. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Bob served in the US Army as a company clerk in Germany, 1957-1959.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Gallez, daughter, Nancy Phillips Lasley and husband Bill, grandsons, Nathaniel and Eli Lasley, and stepgrandsons, Will and Lucas Lasley, sister Betty Phillips Grimes, niece Rev. Beth Arp and husband Rev. Skip Arp, nephews, James, Keith, Sam and Mark Phillips. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Union Hospital and UAP Clinic for their kind and caring assistance.

A private burial service at Highland Lawn Cemetery will be held later this week, conducted by Pastor Craig Wininger, with arrangements by Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47804. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in several weeks with an announcement forthcoming. Donations, in memory of Bob, may be made to Maplewood Christian Church & Sunshine Center, 2000 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47804, Educational Heritage Association, P.O.
