Gerald Warren Smith

PARIS, Ill. — The Rev. Gerald Smith passed away Sunday evening, March 24, 2013, surrounded by his family and friends. Gerald was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Marshall, the son of Warren Smith and Cecile Sanders Smith. He was a graduate of St. Paul Bible College, in St. Paul, Minn. He served more than 25 years in the ministry having served Freedom Baptist in Martinsville, Calvary Baptist in Paris, World Missionary Fellowship in Laurel, Neb., and 13 of those 25 years at New Hope Church, in rural Paris. Gerald also headed a mission in Paris. He was retired from General Motors Company, in Danville.

In 1999 Gerald was honored by the Famous Poet Society for a poem he dedicated to his mother. He was published in Coon Hunter’s Blood Lines magazine and he wrote two novels. Gerald was an avid hunter of pheasants and mushrooms. He enjoyed woodworking, crafting willow furniture, and vegetable and flower gardening. Gerald loved the Lord and tried each day to read his Bible and live his life as Christ taught.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Creech Smith; his children, Lois Graffis of Paris, Gerald L. “Vern” Smith of Marshall, Twila (Wayne) Burgess of Neoga, Janice Smith (Eric Pratt) of Paris, Val Smith of Terre Haute, Ind., and Twon Smith of Marshall; adopted sons, Christopher Smith and Jonathan Smith of Hollister, Mo.; stepdaughter, Allison (Joe) Winschief of Pensacola, Fla.; his first wife, Rosa Lee Smith of Marshall; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Harold (Sharon) Smith of Martinsville, Wiley (Ann) Smith of Vero Beach, Fla.; Lura Wilson, Kenneth (Kay) Smith, and George (Daralea) Smith, all of Marshall. He was preceded in death by a son, Philip Smith; a grandson, Jared Graffis; and a brother-in-law, Don Wilson.

Services in honor of his life will be 1 p.m. CDT Friday at New Hope Church, in rural Paris, with Brothers Dan Helms and Dennis Keefer officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Pearce Funeral Home, and also one hour prior services Friday, at the church.
