Loretta M. Brown Johnson

TERRE HAUTE — Loretta M. Brown Johnson quietly passed away at her residence, in Terre Haute, Thursday, July 10, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Loretta was born Sept. 10, 1934, to the late Clarence and Josephine Brown, in Terre Haute, and was one of eight children. She started a nursing career after graduating from the Union Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and was a member of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa.

As a Registered Nurse, Loretta’s passion for the people in her care was always above and beyond the call of duty. She was a very respected and sought-after nurse for 55 years, even the patients she took care of remembered her to this day. Loretta previously worked at Methodist Hospital, St. Vincent and the Veteran’s Hospitals in Indianapolis, as well as Union Hospital, Terre Haute Regional Hospital and Charter Hospital in Terre Haute.

After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her family that she loved above anything else and her special sister, Anna. Loretta enjoyed taking her children to historical places, museums, theme parks and State parks. In addition, she loved to oil paint, but her favorite pastime was the insatiable love she had for reading books. Loretta was known to keep the Vigo County Library very busy by reading as many as 25 books a week.

Loretta was preceded in death by six of her siblings; sister, Francis and Rink Smith; brother, Floyd and Betty Brown; sisters, Eva and Howard Bumgardner, Anna and Larry Favre, Helen Elizabeth Brown, and Ruthie Roads (brother-in-law, Jack Roads, living); special friend, Jim Coston.

Loretta is survived by a brother, Raymond Brown, and sister-in-law Linda; her three children, Cherie Johnson Montgomery, Anita Johnson Bryant and fiancé Kevin Ward, and Brad Johnson and Christine Grayless; 10 grandchildren, Chris Switzer and fiancée Lindsey Holderfield, Justin Stieglitz and wife Monica, Matty Stieglitz, Zack Johnson, Emily Switzer and fiancé Scott Lee, Katie Nash, Ian Johnson and friend Krystal Knepp, Sarah Stieglitz and friend Ethan Chandler, Michael Bryant and Bobby Bryant; seven great-grandchildren, Quentin Waggoner, Joe Stieglitz, Bella Fyfe, Blayne Johnson, Keegan and Danny Holderfield; a special little one, Kaden Nash; special friend, Fred Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Loretta loved her family and people. She will always be remembered for her wonderful smile that lit up a room and for her big heart.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from 4 until 8 p.m. at DeBaun Funeral Home, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with funeral services on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, for those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
