James Joseph Burns

TERRE HAUTE — James Joseph Burns, age 76, of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 4, 2014, in Union Hospital. He was of the Catholic faith, attending Sacred Heart Church in North Terre Haute, and was very devoted to God. He graduated from Schulte as valedictorian in 1956 and earned a chemical engineering degree from Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1960. He obtained his MBA from Indiana University. He worked as a plant manager with Globe Industries and retired from General Housewares in 1993. Later, he retired from Vigo County in 2000.

Throughout his life he enjoyed home renovations, gardening and the outdoors. Jim was a very loving father, friend and coworker, and everyone will miss him dearly.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas Burns and Stella Veronica Armon Burns; wife, Madonna Rose Woodruff Burns; and brother, John “Jack” Burns.

Jim is survived by his loving companion, Lorida Payne; children, James D. Burns, Mark A. Burns and wife Deb of Plainfield, Ill., Steven E. Burns of Botkins, Ohio, Jean A. Hosier and husband Mike of Greenville, Ohio, Gloria M. Simpson and husband Nathan of DeMotte, Ind., Mike P. Burns of Willowbrook, Ill., Paul W. Burns of Botkins, Mary L. Love and husband James of Brazil, and Victoria A. Vest and husband Geoffrey B. of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Angela M. Farrar of DeMotte, Nicole L. Burns of Raleigh, N.C., Nathan Blake Simpson of DeMotte, Jacqueline M. Burns of DeGraff, Ohio, Lauren J. Hosier of Brazil, Roger D. Chester III of Terre Haute, James M. Hosier of Greenville, Ohio, Tristan W. Burns of Botkins, Geoffrey B. Vest II of Terre Haute, Joseph M. Burns of Botkins, and Lilly Rose Vest of Terre Haute; great-grandchildren, Grace Rosalee Farrar of DeMotte, Liam N. Farrar of DeMotte, Isabella G. Reyes of DeMotte, Weylin Z. Southers of DeGraff, and Aubrey Coble of Lowell, Ind.; as well as many other extended relatives.

A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church, 2322 N. 13 1/2 St. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St. Father Ed Goldbach will be officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Church in Jim’s name.
