Dorothy V. Paine

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy V. Paine, 91, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Mason City, Iowa, passed away at 10:10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus in Terre Haute. She was born in Bloomington, Ill., on Aug. 27, 1921, to Hilton Colby Taylor and Marie Schumacher Taylor. She grew up in Bloomington till age 9, before moving to Atlanta, Ill. Dorothy was a 1939 graduate of Atlanta High School, and was a 1944 graduate of Illinois State University. She was a retired school teacher, having taught at various schools including Hopedale, Ill., Stanford, Ill., Phoenix, and Mason City.

Her memberships include First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City, and Mason City Order of Eastern Star. She attended Union Baptist Church in Terre Haute and was a long-time volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.  Dorothy also was an avid knitter, generously giving her time and talent to donate knitted items for church charities.

She is survived by two sons, Douglas H. Paine and wife Linda of Terre Haute, and Gregory H. Paine and wife Diane of Oro Valley, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Drew H. Paine of Seattle, Blake D. Paine of Evanston, Ill., and Tavia A. Paine of Oro Valley, Ariz.; as well as one sister, Nelle Conway of Albuquerque, N.M. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Paine on May 25, 2007; as well as two infant sisters, Mary Elizabeth Taylor and Beverly Ann Taylor.

Funeral services will be in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at 3 p.m., with Pastor Rod Maris officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the funeral home. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has been chosen, with burial of ashes at a later date in Park Hills Cemetery in Bloomington. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City, or Union Baptist Church in Terre Haute, in Dorothy’s memory.
