Sister Catherine Mayer, 82, died at 1:18 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born Jan. 23, 1931, in Evanston, Ill., to Vincent and Louise Stoffles Mayer and was baptized Barbara Ann.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 6, 1949, and received the name Sister Catherine Alma. She professed final vows Aug. 15, 1956. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Of her 64 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for 35 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and Massachusetts. After leaving formal teaching, she remained at her last school, Costa Catholic in Galesburg, Ill., for another 16 years, serving as administrative assistant. She followed this with three more years in Galesburg, as a volunteer in a variety of areas. In 2005, she returned to the motherhouse and continued volunteer service, for three years as a receptionist at Woods Day Care/Pre-School and then three more years in the transportation office. Beginning in 2011, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by cousins. She is preceded in death by a sister, Sister Mary Vivian Mayer, OSM; and a brother, Vincent Mayer.
The wake is Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial is Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
