Sister Luke Crawford

TERRE HAUTE — Sister Luke Crawford, 88, died at 5:47 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2914, in Union Hospital. She was born Nov. 6, 1925, in Terre Haute, to Frank J. and Cecilia Parker Crawford, and was baptized Kathryn Ann. She was known as Ann to all of her family and friends. Ann attended St. Margaret Mary School and then Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1943. She then attended Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, graduating in 1947 with a degree in journalism.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1948, and professed final vows on Jan. 23, 1956. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. In her 65 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 22 years in education in schools in Indiana, Illinois and Washington D.C. She was dean of students at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College for the 1965-66 academic year and, from 1970 to 1973, served as Director of Admissions. In 1977, she was elected to the leadership team for the Motherhouse Province, where she served for seven years. She then ministered several years in communications and public relations in Indiana and Florida and, in 1994, she began 14 years of service in a variety of ministries at St. Michael Archangel Parish in Sarasota Fla. In 2008, she returned to the Motherhouse where she gave service in multiple ways. Beginning in 2012, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister Luke was gifted in many ways. She was a combination of witty and serious, prayerful and playful, clever and compassionate. She was generous with her time and talent and always worked for the common good.

Sister Luke is preceded in death by brothers, Clement Crawford and Frank P. Crawford; and sisters, Jean Crawford and Cecilia Crawford. She is survived by nephew Hugh G. (Patricia) Crawford of Terre Haute; and nieces, Loretta (Kent) Thompson of Zionsville, and Cathy (Wes) Mehling of Kettering, Ohio.
