Beverly Jean Cole

One of the 25 Bridge Belles from Parke County’s inaugural Covered Bridge Festival, Beverly Jean Cole, of Rockville, and formerly of Tangier, passed away at Union Hospital in Clinton Monday, June 24, 2013. Born Feb. 12, 1926, in Findlay, Ill., to Flayde and Madge Harvey Parent, she moved to Tangier as a child, where she attended and graduated from Tangier High School in 1944. On March 2, 1947, she married fellow Tangier graduate and World War II Navy veteran, Charles Omer Cole, who preceded her in death in 1986. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Parent of Glasgow, Ky., and Joe Parent of Crawfordsville.

The couple raised three children, Glen Tom (Linda) of Tangier, Gayle of Bloomingdale, and Garry (Debbie) of Mitchell, Ind. Her life was blessed by 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Through the years, Beverly had worked as a homemaker, a cook in the cafeteria at Turkey Run High School, and had run Cole’s Market in Tangier alongside Charlie until their retirement.

In addition to her work, Beverly also was a member of Mount Herman Bible Church, Tangier Ladies Aid, Parke County Home-Ec., Parke County 4-H Council, and Turkey Run Booster Club, and served as a 4-H leader in Liberty Township. Bev was a true October fixture at the Covered Bridge bus stop in Tangier. For several years she and Charlie entertained festival visitors there with their dulcimer music, and beyond that, she served as cashier in the food stand. Beverly loved to sing, and she and Charlie had played and sung at several area churches, schools and nursing facilities. She also was a staunch supporter of the Turkey Run Warrior athletic teams, and enjoyed the NFL, especially the Indianapolis Colts, with or without Peyton.

Beverly maintained that she had never met a stranger; those who had the privilege of making her acquaintance over the years can testify to that fact. She had an indefinable gift which made you feel welcome into her life, and let you know she was genuinely interested in you and cared what you had to say.

Too few of us can find in ourselves the genuine, caring nature which Bev drew upon so naturally, and her loss will be felt not only by her family to which she brought so much joy, but, by those of us who consider ourselves, in any small measure, a part of the Parke County community.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard Street, in Rockville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 28, at 2 p.m. with Pastors Jon McLain, Steve Crum and Wendy Olson officiating. Burial will follow in Tangier Cemetery. Beverly has asked that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to her friends at The Mount Herman Bible Church, 3333 W. 900 North, Tangier, IN 47952 in her memory. Friends may sign an online guest register at:
