Howard E. Bowles 97, of Naples, Fla., passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2013, with his loving family by his side after a brief illness at the Frances Georgeson Hospice House in Naples. He was born on May 3, 1916, in Martinsville, Ind., a son of the late Adam L. and Ethel F. (nee Evans) Bowles. A lifelong resident of Indiana, he became a permanent resident of Bonita Springs, Fla., in 1998. He had wintered here since 1974, coming from Pimento. He moved to Merrill Gardens in Naples three years ago.
In 1933, he joined the U.S. Army and served three years. After serving in the Army, he married his sweetheart, Dorothy Cornforth on Nov. 26, 1936, and would have celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary this year. Howard was a dairy farmer and operated his own farm for many years before becoming a loan officer for the Federal Land Bank, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Pimento Lodge 292, F&AM and the Terre Haute Commandery No. 16, Knights Templar.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy C. Bowles of Naples; daughter, Carolyn B. (William P.) Kelly of Kensington, Md.; three grandchildren, Katherine K. (Marc) Leon of Alexandria, Va.; Christopher E. Kelly of Kensington, and William P. Kelly of Florida; and two great-grandchildren, Ian and Evan Leon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son and daughter-in-law, Donald H. and Barbara N. Bowles who died in 1961 as the result of an automobile accident; and his two brothers, Oscar P. Bowles and Hugh G. Bowles.
Services and burial will be held at a later date in Terre Haute, Ind. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home 239-992-4982.
