Virginia L. Salter


JASONVILLE — Virginia L. Salter, 93, Jasonville, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Sullivan County Hospital. She was born in Clay County, on Feb. 21, 1920, to Fred Schmidt and Barbara (Tiefel) Schmidt. She was married to Lester Salter on Feb. 9, 1945, until his death in June 2003. Virginia graduated from Clay City High School in 1936, at the age of 16 and later graduated from Terre Haute Commercial College. Prior to marriage, she worked in the office of Quaker Maid in Terre Haute. After her marriage, she became a homemaker, wife and mother until her death. She was a member of Howesville Presbyterian Church in Jasonville for more than 60 years. She also attended the Trinity Baptist Church in Bloomfield.

She is survived by her children, Janice Shackelford and her husband Joe of Terre Haute, John Salter and his wife Linda of Jasonville, Jean Wright of Farmersburg, and Jim Salter and his wife Becky of Jasonville; six grandchildren, Jay Shackelford and his wife Michele of Stone Mountain, Ga., Jon Shackelford and his wife Susan of Terre Haute, Jerod Wright and his wife Nicole of Bloomington, Sarah Waggle and her husband Larry of Ellettsville, Amanda Hill and her husband Matt of Jasonville, and Eric Salter of Jasonville; eight great-grandchildren, Abby, Emma, and Ella Shackelford of Terre Haute, Ethan and Isaac Wright of Bloomington, Isaiah Waggle of Ellettsville, and Mattilyn and Alaina Hill, of Jasonville; sister, Mary Targett of Clay City; brother, Fred Schmidt and his wife JoAnn of Fort Wayne; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Baker of Jasonville and Dorothy Hoffman of Clay City; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Cary Harbaugh; son-in-law, Jon Wright; sisters-in-law, Helen Rentschler and Ruth Yegerlehner; and brothers-in-laws, Kenneth Salter, Floyd Yegerlehner, Glen Hoffman, and Don Targett.

There will be a private family service on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, with Pastor Ron Walker officiating with burial following in Oaktown Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Oaktown Chapel. Online condolences may be made at:
