Sister Dorothy McLaughlin, 94, died on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 2:30 a.m., in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Butte, Mont., to Michael and Mary Frances Harrington McLaughlin and was baptized Edna Catherine.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 11, 1936, and was given the name Sister Dorothy Clare. She was professed final vows Jan. 23, 1944. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from Indiana State University. In her 77 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered in education for 46 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, New Hampshire and Maryland. For eight of these years, she served as principal. Retiring from education, she served in secretarial positions both at the Provincial House in Fall River, Mass., and then in the Office of Congregation Advancement at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She then gave eight years of residential service at the Motherhouse and beginning in 2003, committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
She is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Clare Pollard; and a brother, James P. McLaughlin.
The wake is Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, June 21, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the church, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
